Ohio My 20 plate is installed so the hot water goes into the tank. This is how all the MFGs recommend it to be installed. If you have young ones or guests in your home DO NOT install it until you have a mixing valve installed, the water the plate produces even with my boiler set to max is smok’en hot and WILL hurt a person. You asked about the best way to hook up your water heater and I am not sure there is a best way unless you are spending lots of money to heat water. We use a heck of a lot of hot water at my place. So I have more room to work than most others when it comes to spending money to save some, if you know what I mean? I started out with a side arm unit and while it does make hot water it is slow. Might be OK for single men or households with low usage, no way one will keep up with 5 in the house and clean freak wife. The classic six-lid cookstove could have one or both lids plus the divider over the firebox removed and stepped cast iron pots and griddles could be placed tightly but directly over the fire.
One can still find some of these old stepped pots including large cast iron tea kettles. Eventually, an extension to one side of the cookstove was added with a tin lined copper reservoir for heating domestic hot water.

Fairbanks, AK Thanks for the info on the Laing pump. I’m not used to working on spas so I had no idea what to look for. This pump only draws 98 watts so it will be extremely economical to operate. I still need to figure out the best way to incorporate this into the spa plumbing. If I tee them into the existing plumbing the circulator will probably backfeed within the lines and not circulate within the tub very well.
I like the idea of teeing into an existing line but worry about how it would work when the main pump is on high and pumping lots of water. I might be able to place one tee just after the main pump and then tee the supply line just before it goes into a jet.

The goal of the project was to heat my hot tub in an economical way. The existing built-in electric heater used almost watts when running and at the new electric rates, keeping the tub up to F made the utility bill very high. I attempted for a while to keep the temperature at a lower setting and turn it up only in anticipation of using the tub.
This was unsatisfactory since it makes spontaneous use of the tub impossible and still used expensive electricity for heat. The idea began when my 21 year old household gas water heater appeared to develop a leak. The leak seemed to grow so I bought and installed a new tank gas water heater. I then had a somewhat viable gas water heater on hand.
Why not use it to heat water for the hot tub? The hot tub is located in the back yard lower patio, and the only apparent place for the extra gas water heater would near the gas source next to its replacement in the basement, about 40 feet distant from the tub.
